After being inhabited for centuries, deprived of many travertine blocks and used as a place of Christian worship, the Coliseum needed major restoration. After the strong earthquake of 1806, which severely compromised in the last floor of the building, they were begun early work. Numerous subsequent interventions, carried out by the best architects of the time including Raffaele Stern, Giuseppe Valadier, Gaspare Salvi and Luigi Canina, turned to security definitely the Coliseum consecrating him as a symbol of Ancient Rome
