The Gallery of Maps is along the path that leads to the Sistine Chapel, it is an exceptional representation of all the regions of Italy, islands and major cities. Today the frescoed maps along its walls are a magnificent example of sixteenth geographical knowledge, are also to mean a sort of previous Italian units to the actual because of spiritual origin. The gallery was ordered by Pope Gregory XIII who entrusted the task to a team of international artists: Jerome Muziano, Cesare Nebbia, the Dutch brothers Bril, Giovanni Antonio Vanosino and Antonio Danti. The project was completed in about five years, from 1580 to 1585. In addition to the walls, the artists also occupied with decorating the ceiling with scenes of miracles which put in correspondence with the region in which they occurred.
