Inaugurated by Pope Gregory XVI in 1844 in the Lateran Palace, the collection of Gregorian Profane Museum includes several archaeological finds, sculptures and mosaics found in excavations carried out in the Papal States. In 1962 the exhibits were transferred to the Vatican, the museum was reorganized in the new wing of the Vatican Museums and reopened to the public in 1970 by Pope Paul VI. The museum is organized in chronological order in five distinct sections: the most ancient finds of the fourth century BC, at the latest, of the fourth century A.D. There are Greek and Roman statues, the Roman Imperial sculptures, sarcophagi, marble and even Jewish tombstones.
