Many of the emperors who succeeded to the Flavian dynasty of Vespasian left their mark on the Colosseum, but the first restoration of some importance was the work of Antoninus Pius. They made then requires further action when a fire destroyed the upper structures of the amphitheater forcing the transfer of the games at the Circus Maximus for about five years. Beginning in 442 A.D. the Colosseum was also damaged by earthquakes and then restored several times.
