Which cover over 13 hectares wide, the Baths of Diocletian were the largest ever built by the Roman bath complex: for its realization were employed at least 8 years 298-306 A.D. The whole area, built in the eastern area of Rome, was abandoned during the Gothic War (about A.D. 538), and only around 1561 on the ruins of the baths are taken to build. Michelangelo Buonarroti realized there the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and Martyrs exploiting the concave wall of the original Roman calidarium for the apse. Today the hot springs are home to a vast collection of sculptures, funerary materials and furniture of the Ancient Rome. They are involved in the museum: the Cloister of Michelangelo, the Garden of the Five Hundred, the Octagonal Hall, and some well-preserved rooms of the original baths.
