One of the most recent art collections of the Vatican Museums, the Collection of Modern Religious Art was inaugurated in 1973 by Pope Paul VI that he intended to document and promote the religious sentiment present in contemporary art. The collection, largely formed through private donations or the artists themselves, is housed in the Borgia, on the first floor of the Pontifical Palace, in some rooms on the ground floor and underlying lounges to the Sistine Chapel. In total it is a good 55 rooms and approximately 800 works created between the nineteenth and twenty-first century. Are in your collection almost 250 international artists including Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Paul Klee, Giorgio de Chirico, Renato Guttuso, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso. The Collection of Modern Religious Art hosts not only paintings but also contemporary sculptures in bronze, glass and ceramics.
